John Imprisoned by Herod
Matthew 14:1–5; Mark 6:17–20; Luke 3:19–20
Lk 3:19–20But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him [John the Baptizer] about Herodias, his brother’s wife, and about all the evil things Herod had done, 20added this to everything else—he locked John up in prison. Mt 14:3–4For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4because John had been telling him, “It’s not lawful for you to have her!”
Mk 6:19So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not. Mt 14:5Though he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, since they regarded him as a prophet. Mk 6:20aHerod was in awe of John and was protecting him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man.
