John Imprisoned by Herod

Matthew 14:1–5; Mark 6:17–20; Luke 3:19–20

^{Lk 3:19–20}But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him [John the Baptizer] about Herodias, his brother’s wife, and about all the evil things Herod had done, ²⁰added this to everything else—he locked John up in prison. ^{Mt 14:3–4}For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, ⁴because John had been telling him, “It’s not lawful for you to have her!”

^{Mk 6:19}So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not. ^{Mt 14:5}Though he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, since they regarded him as a prophet. ^{Mk 6:20a}Herod was in awe of John and was protecting him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man.
