Jesus’ Great Prophetic Discourse

Matthew 24:36–51; Mark 13:32–37; Luke 21:34–38

Mt 24:36“Now concerning that day and hour no one knowsneither the angels in heaven, nor the Son—except the Father only. 37As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38For in those days before the Flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark. 39They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. So this is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be: 40Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one left. 41Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and one left. 42Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.

43“But know this: If the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into. 44This is why you also should get ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. 45Who then is a faithful and sensible slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time? 46Blessed is that slave whom his master, when he comes, will find working. 47I assure you: He will put him in charge of all his possessions.

An Unexpected Return

48“But if that wicked slave says in his heart, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49and starts to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50that slave’s master will come on a day he does not expect and at a time he does not know. 51He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Lk 21:34–36“Be on your guard, that your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, and worries of life, and that day come on you unexpectedly 35like a trap. For it will come on all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.

Mk 13:34–37“It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his slaves, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert. 35Therefore be alert, since you don’t know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at the crowing of the rooster, or early in the morning. 36Otherwise, he might come suddenly and find you sleeping. 37And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”

Lk 21:37–38During the day, He was teaching in the temple complex, but in the evening He would go out and spend the night on what is called the Mount of Olives. 38Then all the people would come early in the morning to hear Him in the temple complex[1]
