As a child, what "hot buttons" did you push to make your parents mad?
Would you rather ask questions or answer them? Why?
Jesus Discusses
the Deity of the Davidic Messiah
Matthew 22:41–46; Mark 12:35–37; Luke
20:41–44
Mt 22:41While the Pharisees were together, Jesus
questioned them, Mk 12:35aas He taught in the temple complex, Mt
22:42a“What do you think about the Messiah?
Whose Son is He?”
42b“David’s,” they told Him.
43aHe asked them, “How is it then that David Lk 20:42ain the
Book of Psalms Mt 22:43b–45inspired by the Spirit, calls Him ‘Lord’:
44‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your
enemies under Your feet” ’? 45If, then, David calls Him ‘Lord,’
how is He his Son?”
46No one was able to answer Him at all, and from that day no one dared
to question Him any more. Mk 12:37bAnd the large crowd was listening
to Him with delight.[1]
- God is ... What do we learn about God in this passage?
- We are ... What do we learn about people in this passage?
- Given this issue of authority in Luke chapter 20, why does Jesus continue to challenge traditional values?
- Were the Pharisees expecting the Messiah to be human (David's descendant) or divine (David's Lord)?
- Why would it take Jesus' death and resurrection to show that the Messiah is more than just David's descendant?
- I will ... What has the Holy Spirit revealed to us in this passage? How can I apply it to my life this week?
- What does Jesus' humanity mean to you? What does his divinity mean?
- You can ... Who do you know who needs to hear this? Feel free to share with others by social media links at the bottom of this.
