Mary of Bethany
Anoints Jesus
Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; John 12:2–8
Mk 14:3aWhile He was in Bethany at the house of
Simon the leper, Jn 12:2they gave a dinner for Him there; Martha was
serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. Mk
14:3bA woman came with an
alabaster jar of pure and expensive†
fragrant oil of nard. She broke the
jar and poured it on His head [Jn 12:3Then Mary took a pound of fragrant oil—pure and expensive nard—anointed
Jesus’ feet, and wiped His feet with her hair. So the house was filled with the
fragrance of the oil].
Mk 14:4–5But some [Mt 26:8the disciples] were expressing
indignation to one another: “Why has this fragrant oil been wasted? 5For
this oil might have been sold for
more than three hundred denarii†
and given to the poor” [Jn 12:4–6Then
one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray Him), said, 5“Why wasn’t this fragrant oil sold for three
hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was
a thief. He was in charge of the money bag and would steal part of what was put
in it]. And they began to scold her.
6Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for Me. 7You always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have Me. 8She has done what she could; she has anointed My body in advance for burial. 9I assure you: Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”[1]

Note:
Why Did Judas Betray Jesus?
The New Testament never gives a clear answer to the question of why Judas betrayed Jesus. Several theories have been proposed. Most of the theories agree about two things: (1) Judas wanted Jesus to set up an earthly kingdom, and (2) Judas was convinced that Jesus would not do so, but would sacrifice His life.
One theory says that Judas betrayed Jesus because he hoped to force Jesus to use His power and bring in an earthly kingdom. Another theory is that when Judas became convinced that Jesus was determined to throw away His life, he decided to salvage for himself what he could. This theory emphasizes the selfishness in Judas’s question, “What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?” (Matt. 26:15). Perhaps the best reason is stated by Luke: “Satan entered Judas” (Luke 22:3a)
