Series: True Story “Parables of Jesus”

Stories are the language of the soul. We connect with stories and we remember them. That is why Jesus used storytelling so often to illustrate deeper truths. His stories, known as parables, were Jesus’ way to communicate important Kingdom principles. Although the details of these stories were imagined, the Kingdom principles are not. They are true and eternal.

Title: Canceled Debt” (Unmerciful Servant)

Bookmark: Click Here

Opening Thoughts: There is an undeniable link between God's forgiveness of you and your forgiveness of others. What does it look like to truly forgive—to cancel the debt and let someone go?

v  “Christianity has an image problem.”

===============================================================

Text: Matthew 18:21-35

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”

22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[c] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’

30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Summarize the main story: Describe the events of the story in your own words.

v  Review and retell the story.

Reflections for applications:

v   10 Thousand Talents?

o   In approximate modern equivalents, if a laborer earns $20 per hour, at 2,000 hours per year he would earn $40,000 per year, and a talent would equal $800,000 (USD). Hence, “ten thousand talents” hyperbolically represents an incalculable debt—in today’s terms, about $8 billion!

v  Hundred denarii ($16,000)

v  What God Has Done for Us

o   Romans 5:6-8 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

v  We Need Saving

o   Galatians 1:4 NIV - who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

o   1 Peter 1:24 NIV - For, "All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,

v  Responsibility to Forgive

o   Matthew 6:12, 14-15 NIV - 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ... 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

o   Colossians 3:8-10 NIV - 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

o   Colossians 3:12-14 NIV - 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

v  Truly Forgive?

o   2 Corinthians 5:18-19 NIV - 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

v  How Joseph Forgave

o   Genesis 50:15-21 NIV - 15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?" 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Your father left these instructions before he died: 17 'This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.' Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father." When their message came to him, Joseph wept. 18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. "We are your slaves," they said. 19 But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

v  Reconciled

o   We are reconciled to God when we are forgiven!

o   Acts 2:38-39 NIV - 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."

Atheist was walking through the woods

An atheist was walking through the woods.

    "What majestic trees"!

    "What powerful rivers"!

    "What beautiful animals"!

    He said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7 foot grizzly charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing
    In on him.

He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer. He tripped & fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the Atheist cried out, "Oh my God!"

    Time Stopped.
    The bear froze.
    The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident." "Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer"?

The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask You to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps You could make the BEAR a Christian"?

    "Very Well," said the voice.

The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke:

"Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen."

    Series Questions Jesus Asked

    Title: What Good Is It?

    Bookmark: Click Here

    Opening Thoughts:

v  Who should as the question?

    o   Crowd & Disciples

    v  Oxymorons and Paradox

v  Jesus' question forces us to think about our priorities and pursuits in life.  What does your life say about what you are truly gaining and what you are truly losing?

    Text: Mark 8:34-38

    The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Summarize main story: Describe the events of the story in your own words.

    ·          Review and retell the story.

    Reflections for applications:

v  Matthew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

v  Someone who had it all. Steve Jobs died at 56 years old.

o   “…maybe it’s just like an on/off switch and click – and you’re gone. Maybe that’s why I don’t like putting on/off switches on Apple devices.” (Steve Jobs in Biography by Walter Isaacson)

    Open Arms
    Finding Your Way Back

“At What Cost?”    By Randy Roper
    Bible Study & Discussion Guide

Use this study guide on Sunday evening or at another time as a supplement to the Sunday sermon on May 3. After viewing the sermon entitled “At What Cost?” on the Edmond Church of Christ Youtube channel, use this discussion guide for a small group Bible study or devotional with family members in your house or friends in a video conference.

Main Idea: If we choose to live apart from God, we need to understand that decision has repercussions in this life and in the next life. So much in life seems to come down to a cost-benefit analysis. Do you understand the cost of living and dying without Christ?

    Open
    • Can you think of a time when a warranty or guarantee benefited you? Explain.
    • What guarantees do we have when it comes to living the Christian life?
    • When do you feel the tension between the world’s values and the values of God’s kingdom?

People often feel the tension of choosing between the values of the world and the values of the kingdom of God. What we pursue in life reveals what we value, or view as most important. When we choose to pursue the things of this world, we do so with no guarantee of getting what we want or what we need most.

    Dig
    Read Matthew 16:21-27
    • What event had just occurred which prompted Jesus’s validation of Peter?

After Peter’s celebrated confession of Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah and Son of God, everything in the gospel story seems to move toward Jerusalem and Jesus’ destiny at the cross. Peter’s confession serves as the hinge point in the narrative. From that point on, Jesus openly spoke of his approaching death and resurrection.

    • How did Peter respond to Jesus’ statement about his impending suffering and crucifixion?
    • Where did Peter’s response come from? How is it understandable? How is it surprising?

Nothing had prepared Jesus’ disciples for the prediction of his coming death. As Jesus’ notoriety was mounting and momentum for an uprising against Rome was increasing, surely many of the Jews who followed Jesus expected him to storm into Jerusalem and lead a holy war against the Roman regime. Such a revolution would be impossible if Jesus were dead.

    • How did Jesus respond to Peter?
    • Compare and contrast Jesus’ response to Peter’s earlier remarks (i.e., his confession
of Jesus as Messiah) and his response to Peter’s later remarks (i.e., his rebuke of Jesus for announcing his death).
    • Does Jesus’ response to Peter seem excessive? Why or why not?
    • What does Jesus mean by the “concerns of God” and “human concerns”?
    • How does Jesus describe the nature of discipleship?
    • How does Jesus’ example in Philippians 2:5-8 help us understand the nature of discipleship?
    • Can a person “gain the world” without forfeiting his/her soul? Explain.

    Read Philippians 3:4b-11
    • Explain the significance of Paul’s credentials.

Paul’s resume may not be impressive in today’s terms, but many people in Paul’s day would have given their very lives to achieve the successes and acquire the accomplishments of Paul. He had it all—everything the world offered in that day to guarantee success, social standing and respect. But as the Spirit of God aligned the heart of Paul with the will of God, the truth was revealed.

    • What was Paul’s perspective on all his worldly accomplishments?  What specifically did he call them?
    • What did Paul claim was far better than his worldly accomplishments?
    • What does it mean to “know Christ, know the power of his resurrection and to participate in his sufferings” in our current-day context?

When it comes to material things we buy, dreams we chase and accomplishments we pursue, there is always a cost-benefit analysis. Is it worth it? What a tragedy to get to the end of our lives and realize everything we valued and everything we worked for turned out to be momentary and meaningless.

    Is it worth it?
Everything in life comes with a price tag,
but not everything comes with a guarantee.

    Reflect & Apply
    • Do you agree with the statement above, that “everything in life comes with a price tag, but not everything comes with a guarantee”? Give an example.
    • What guarantee do we have for eternal salvation?
    • When do you most feel the tension between choosing to adopt the world’s
values or aligning with Kingdom values? How do you deal with the tension?
    • What is your reaction to Jesus’ statement, “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
    • What is the appeal of “gaining the world”?
    • What would you tell someone who is choosing to live their life apart from Christ?

    Prayer Starter
    “Dear God,
Your ways are not my ways.
Your thoughts are not my thoughts.
    Your wisdom exceeds my understanding.
    Your will transcends my ways.
Help me submit to your wisdom and align with
your will in every area of my life, including…”
